Friday night was a beauty at Westlake's Chaparral Stadium. The age old rivalry between Austin High And Westlake continued. It was a night to remember, for sure.
The JVA kicked it off with a very physical match where every possession was contested. It was like a heavy weight fight! Possession was fairly even during the first half, though, with Westlake having just a few more chances to score. Our goalie, Alex Phan, and the whole D line manned up and did a fantastic job in stopping all of their attacks, taking a scoreless match into half-time- lotsa body blows no score. Austin High really stepped it up in the second half with great passing and some great scoring opportunities. It got chippy in the second half, with several fouls and at least one yellow card, as both teams very passionately pursued a goal. In particular, Merek fought really hard during the whole game. He seemed to be everywhere, both defending and attacking. Very late in the game Miguel executed a nice cross from a corner kick, but a beautiful header from Niko was stopped by the Westlake goalie. Finally, two minutes before the end of the game, Mateus penetrated nicely down the right side, crossed the ball in front of the goal, and Miguel Quintana dove to score the one goal of the game, with a beautiful header. THE KO PUNCH! A wild celebration followed from the both the players and the crowd. AUSTIN HIGH WINS!
The varsity tried to carry the momentum into the night cap, entering halftime with a 1-0 lead. The lead slipped away and their valiant effort ended with a 2-1 result. What a great season for Austin High soccer nonetheless. First year Coach Jesus Arreola is extremely excited to get next year started as are we! We've come a long way baby!
We love playing Westlake! We love beating Westlake! And we love Austin High Soccer! Go Maroooons!!
